The ‘Town of Topiary’, located between Latrobe and Sheffield, maintains more than 100 imaginative topiary characters along streets and in parks and private gardens. Here you can see everything from a life-size topiary steam train to a spider, an elephant and baby, a guitar and Tasmania’s last “living” Tasmanian Tiger. Railton also features Seven Sheds Brewery, Meadery and Hop Garden, the Looking Glass fibre optics shops and Railton Arts & Crafts which features local crafters’ work. On the edge of town is the mystical Sykes Sanctuary – which features strange monuments with mathematical equations in a serene nature sanctuary.
Nearby is the Henry Somerset Orchid Reserve which is the only orchid reserve in Australia and hosts more than 30 varieties, about half of which are endemic to the local area. With these unusual attractions, The Town of Topiary is a little bit quirky and definitely a lot of fun!
