While away the time in Devonport’s Distilleries and Cellar Doors

Devonport City Council

For a population of over half-a-million, Tasmania is over represented when it comes to Tasmanian’s indulging in the classic art of distilling spirits.

From old shearing sheds packed with barrels, to state-of-the-art copper stills sitting pretty in inviting bars,  even those most steadfastly opposed to the top shelf will find themselves discovering a tipple that warms them from the inside out and makes their nose fizz with heat and aroma that only a good gin or whiskey can bring.

Southern Wild Distillery

The makers of award-winning Dasher + Fisher Gin, Southern Wild Distillery calls Devonport home. The award winning gins by distiller, George Burgess, are based on the landscape of the North West with the highlight ingredients, native pepperberry, lavender and wakame, all locally sourced. Dasher and Fisher are two wild rivers that run from the snow-melt mountains, through the rich hinterland, to the pristine coast of Tasmania’s north-west. From this pure water they copper pot distill various botanicals to create different layers of taste for each variant.

Empress Craft Beer

Sister to Launceston’s popular St John Craft Beer, Empress Craft Beer sits cosily in Oldaker Street where an old mechanics workshop has been converted into a moody, bespoke and inviting space featuring indoor/outdoor seating and comfortable booths.

While its main focus may be more about the craft beer, Empress also offers a wine list that is focused on lesser-seen local and international labels and there’s broad support for local distillers, with the gins and whisky line-up augmented with rarer imported spirits.

Their neighbours Hill Street Grocer, provide the deli cheese, meats, breads and nibbles that comprise the Empress food offering.
